## One · The forty {#the-forty}

- The record begins with an instrument that was never built for this reading. The quad slip is four figure-of-two slips sharing one centre, and its pinned calibration holds one tiny detune on one pair of them: a hundred and ten billionths, under a mask of four whole numbers, with the two pairs set a little over one and a half units apart, read to four decimal places, and run for one thousand and twenty-four laps. Nothing in that calibration is tuned for what follows.
- Read by the readout's own decimal places, the run gives ninety marks on each of its four slips. Twelve marks read zero before anything resolves, in six pairs a lap apart. Then, at lap one hundred and thirty-seven, the readout's first digit arrives, and after it the record climbs four base-ten epochs of a ten-thousandth each.
- Each epoch holds exactly ten sign-segments, each spanning one hundred and ninety-two laps from its first mark to its last, the marks in pairs a lap apart, four marks to every beat of the slip. Four epochs of ten give forty, and the fortieth segment is the pair of marks at laps one thousand and seven and one thousand and eight. A forty-first would come only after the run has ended. So the forty is given by three things and nothing else: the origin at lap one, the duration of one thousand and twenty-four laps, and the gap between marks of the same epoch.
- The four slips carry identical marks under this calibration. Two of them read as one number, x, and two as another, y, each forty long, and together they are eighty.

![Plate — The segments by epoch at 1,024 laps and at 1,600: ten an epoch within the baseline, the forty; run on, an eleventh in the fourth epoch, the sixtieth to the sixty-second in the sixth, the sixty-third opening the seventh](/sx/assets/readings/the-bend/zb-the-epochs.svg)

## Two · The plate {#the-plate}

- Set x on the left and y on the right, each on its own locked line, with a meeting line between them at the midpoint. Give every row of x its amplitude from its epoch, one unit in the first epoch and four in the fourth, inward toward the meeting line on the even rows and outward on the odd. Make y the mirror of x. The two sides then widen tier by tier and their inner marks approach the meeting line, meeting it only at the fourth epoch, where the lock is: row forty.
- The plate's measures were read from a hand-drawn mock-up: the locked lines four and a quarter units from the meeting line, the rows seven tenths of a unit apart, and a third vertical line, the observer's, standing one unit to the left of the meeting line, closer to x. That third line is the registration. It is the only thing on the plate that is not a mirror of something else.
- The observer, z, is never deeper than the longest number. It counts upward from its depth to the origin and holds a row while the two sides do not overlap there, two for every row held. On the straight plate it holds every row: eighty at the horizon.

## Three · The turn and its window {#the-turn}

- A turn at depth t on one side rotates every row at or below t about that side's locked line, by an angle θ, inward when positive. A row becomes unlawful when its mark passes the meeting line, because the two sides would overlap, or when it swings over its own locked line, because the order of its three positions is lost. The lawful window at t is the range of θ with no unlawful row.
- Every bound of that window is a closed form in the plate's measures. A mark at offset ξ inward and d below the pivot reaches the meeting line at θ equal to its angle from the inward axis less the arc-cosine of the meeting line's distance over its own; it reaches its locked line at that angle plus or minus ninety degrees. The window therefore grows with the depth of the turn, because the lock row's lever is longest from the origin.

| the depth of the turn | outward | inward | what binds inward |
|---|---|---|---|
| t = 1 | −8.175° | +0.535° | row forty reaching the meeting line |
| t = 20 | −15.648° | +1.046° | row forty reaching the meeting line |
| t = 40 | −90° | +90° | the row itself swinging over its line |

- Bring the locked lines in to exactly four units, so that the fourth epoch's inner marks stand on the meeting line, and no inward turn is lawful at any depth above thirty-two. Turn past the bound and the deepest rows cross first, so the observer, counting upward, meets the broken rows before any other and holds nothing.
- Each of those bounds was checked against the turn itself, one thousandth of a degree inside and one thousandth beyond, at every depth, under both plates, with the flip counted and with it admitted: one hundred and sixty checks, every one agreeing.

![Plate — The lawful window of the turn by depth: the inward bound, the outward bound, and the dashed turn at which a row would come past the registration, on a signed square-root scale](/sx/assets/readings/the-bend/zb-the-window.svg)

## Four · The spin and the points {#the-spin}

- The zigzag of the plate is a spin seen edge-on: the strict projection is a half-turn a segment about the side's own vertical axis, and a slip δ a segment turns it further or less. A side may arrive with fewer than forty segments, its measure, and may approach the other side by moving its locked line toward the meeting line.
- A lock point is a row whose mark lies past the observer's registration toward the meeting line and not past it. With the registration one unit from the meeting line, three and a quarter units inward of x's line, exactly the fourth epoch's inner marks lie past it: rows thirty-two, thirty-four, thirty-six, thirty-eight and forty. Five points at the measure forty. Arriving with the measure thirty-nine, the fortieth row is absent and four remain, and the observer passes over the absent row and resolves seventy-eight.
- The lawful spin is the slip over which the lock points stay as they are and no mark passes the meeting line. At the measure forty it runs to just under nine tenths of a degree a segment either way, bound by row forty falling short of the registration; at thirty-nine to just under a degree, bound by row thirty-eight. At a full degree a segment only rows thirty-two and thirty-four remain past the registration.
- The gap decides the points. A registration two tenths of a unit from the meeting line gives none; one unit gives five; two units gives the whole fourth epoch, ten. An approach of twenty-six hundredths brings the fourth epoch's inner marks exactly to the meeting line with the five still lawful; three tenths stands them over it and closes the spin to nothing.

![Plate — The lawful spin at the measures forty and thirty-nine, the lock points of the fourth epoch, and the gap that gives them](/sx/assets/readings/the-bend/zb-the-spin.svg)

## Five · The one asymmetry {#the-asymmetry}

- x and y are mirrors, and every control of the instrument applies to either side alike: which side turns and spins, the depth and angle of the turn, the plate's two measures, the observer's depth, the flip, the measure, the slip, the approach. One quantity is set against the mirror: the registration, which stands closer to x. It is set before any turn or spin, and it decides the lock points.
- That sentence was staked before it was read, with its measures and its kills sealed: over two hundred and forty settings of every control, the two sides' readings were compared with the registration mirrored for y and then with it as one column. Mirrored, the readings differed at no setting. As one column, they differed at two hundred and thirty-eight, and only in the lock points and the lawful spin: x locking over five with a spin of under a degree while y, whose inner marks stop a unit and a quarter short of the column, locks over none and spins free, the window and the observer's count the same for both.
- So in the instrument as built the registration is the only quantity by which x is told from y, and it reaches the alignment it registers and nothing else. That is a fact of the instrument. The sentence that was staked had two more parts: that the strict projection and the closed forms are both readings of the same thing, which the checks above bear out; and a reading of what the mechanism is, which was held and never staked, and is not read here.

## Six · Thirty, and the epochs beyond {#the-thirty}

- A second number was registered before any of this was walked: that thirty, added to itself, would be a matter of note at sixty. Run to eight hundred laps, the same calibration gives thirty segments in three epochs of ten, the thirtieth at laps seven hundred and eighty-one and seven hundred and eighty-two, and the count stands at thirty from there to the run's end. In the bend at the measure thirty the two sides meet nowhere past the registration: no lock point, the spin free either way, and the observer reaching sixty only by passing over ten absent rows.
- Run to one thousand six hundred laps, the fourth epoch gains an eleventh segment at laps one thousand and forty-three and forty-four, the fifth holds eleven and the sixth ten. The sixtieth, sixty-first and sixty-second segments fall in the sixth epoch; the sixty-third and sixty-fourth open the seventh. The readout's seventh step therefore falls between sixty-two and sixty-three, which in base three is where 2022 becomes 2100 and the carry climbs two places.

## Seven · The fifth seat {#the-fifth-seat}

- The plate has three parties, x, y and z. Its reader is a fourth, not drawn, and a fifth when the reader counts their own position. On this instrument that position is the observer's depth: a reader at depth N holds N rows and resolves twice N at the horizon, a reading at N on the natural number line, and at ten, twenty.
- A turn can bring a row past the registration before the hold breaks: a point gained before the break. Under the plate's measures it never does; the row that would come past, row thirty, arrives after row forty has already crossed the meeting line, at every depth. It does so only when the registration stands between one and six hundredths and one and twenty-six hundredths of a unit from the meeting line, where row thirty waits just short of it.
- One question is left to the reader: what would you like to sign as an absence? On this plate the specific minus one is the registration, and a signed zero against it names the row that is not there: the row absent below the measure, the lock point not taken, the row where the hold broke. The page signs it in the reader's own register and nowhere else; nothing a reader does enters the record.

## The carry and the release {#the-carry-and-the-release}

- Carried: the forty as the record gives it, from the origin, the duration and the gap between marks; the plate and its one registration; the lawful window at every depth in closed form, and its agreement with the turn itself; the five points at forty and the four at thirty-nine, and the spin that keeps them; the one asymmetry, staked and read; thirty with no point and the seventh epoch opening at sixty-three.
- Released: every reading of what these are beyond the instrument. The instrument's results are facts of the instrument as built, read over a calibration that was pinned before this reading existed, and nothing here is a claim about number, measurement, linearity or the world.
- Open: which registration the plate's third line is, one column or its mirror; what a point gained before the break would be, where the registration allows one; what the reader signs.
