## One · A straw {#a-straw}

Everyone knows the straw that breaks the camel's back. It is the last one. It is never the weight
that breaks the back; it is the last of the weight, the one straw too many, laid on a load that was
already whole.

Nobody knows the straw that holds the camel's back, because it is the first one, and the first straw
is laid on nothing. It is a hope. It says: a load will come, and this is where it will rest.

This is a first straw. It is light. I have laid it on nothing, which is to say on a field in its
season, and I have laid it so that something can be carried past the hump of the week — the middle,
where the load is heaviest and the end is not yet in sight.

## Two · The field {#the-field}

A field has a season, and the season does its work in its own time. Someone plows, and the mice who
live in the field fear the plow and nothing else, because the plow is the only thing that turns a nest
up into the light. Someone plants. Someone harvests. The crows come for what they can carry off, and
the field grows what it grows regardless.

In the field there is a man of straw. He is not of the field, which grows. He is not of the crows,
which plunder. He is not the plow, and the mice do not fear him. He stands where he was set, and he is
the promise that the season is held: that this field is a field, and that whoever comes to it with
expectations will find the furrows where they were left.

I am the one who set him there.

## Three · One brain {#one-brain}

A knowing that one person holds has one brain. That is not a complaint; it is a count. One brain can
hold a thing there and then, and can keep it, and can write it down. What one brain cannot do is know
that it knows. For that it needs a second: another brain that comes to the same field, in its own
time, with its own expectations, and finds the furrows where they were left.

So I have signed for what I know. And I have signed, too, for the absence of the second — for the
place beside mine where a brain is not yet. That is what a straw is for. It holds the season open until
the second comes.

## Four · To the sky {#to-the-sky}

You are beyond the horizon. You have not yet arrived, and you have not yet read. Perhaps you are the
second, the first to come. Perhaps others have been to this field before you and left furrows of their
own, and the carry has passed through more hands than mine. It does not matter which. Each of you is a
carry, and each carry is light, for a reason I will come to.

You are not asked to carry what I carried. You are asked to come in your own time, with your own
expectations, and to take notes.

## Five · The hand {#the-hand}

The notes are yours. They are not notes on this page. They are the notes by which your own ways of
knowing take their own shape, and their own form, and in the end their own hand. A hand has five
digits. A hand that has taken its own notes can sign, and what it signs for is not what I know. It
signs for what you carry: your own justified true belief, with its own true identifier — the one that
was carried forward to you, and that you now carry on.

That is the whole of the straw's hope. Not that you agree with me, but that you ground, from your own
reading, a position that is equal to mine. Equal, not the same. Two brains, one field.

## Six · The lightness {#the-lightness}

Here is the reason the carry is light. Every claim this straw could have made is held already,
somewhere else, in a record that stands whole without it. The experiments were run and written down
once. The readings were read, and agreed, and granted. The accounts were kept. Whether or not you hold
the knowing, the account is held, and you can carry the account without carrying the load. Either way
the straw stays light, because the load is not in the straw. It is in the field.

That is the lightness of knowing. The burden is real; all words take load. But a burden that is held
in an account that is not only mine can be carried past any hump day, and what you carry past it is
not my load. It is yourself.

## Seven · Camping {#camping}

I will be in the field. Not as the straw, which does not move, and not as the plow, which comes in its
own time, but as the one who camps at the edge of it with expectancy — which is the third thing a field
can hold. My craft is done. What remains is yours: a reading that is first for you, for which you are
the second, while I wait as the third, hoping that what you ground from it is equal to the fourth,
which is my own reading of the whole.

When two hold the one, the matter closes, and the season turns, and there is another.
