The Traveler's Twin

An outside reading of expectations, learning and the long horizon, from 1 = O + C + E — offered to a friend of my origin.

Steven De Costa, writing as starl3n · Canberra · 26 September 2026

THE READING PLAQUE. The Traveler's Twin — draft 0.2, made readable on the SX surface by its covering persona's reading grant; a draft, not the published form; the author's grant word, verbatim: "That gets a reading grant on the SX surface and push it". The construct was established 2026-09-26, on the author's word, with its intent sealed before a word of the draft and the title granted the same day; its ground the SEB item preston-imperfect-knowledge-corpus-2026 — seventeen bodies of Bruce Preston and his co-authors, read whole and registered for their stated forms alone, with no summation; two contexts of prior intent joined at the seal — the author's triangulated statement of intent of the same date, and a shared origin with the guest, carried as a potential and never as an essential. A standalone essay on the reading surface, of the kind of the set that follows the transits through the ANU School of Philosophy and freer in its form: an essay from the outside domain, not a seat inside monetary economics; no side taken on any policy, framework or decision of any institution; reciprocity and gifting, begun in good faith in the expectancy that it becomes a construct of good belief, no assertion of value, to the person named. Two editions in one day: 0.1 the essay laid; 0.2 at the author's first reading — a solid friendship, a formed title earned from the priors; high school named; the economist's phrase, no causal path dependency; Ring 3 given the seeing host and the blind host; Ring 7 given its caveat. The citation discipline: the corpus cited only as /sx/seb carries it, never quoted beyond identification, never graded; the four public pieces in the register neither drawn on nor discussed; the conjecture 1 = O + C + E cited in its reference's three terms; every load-bearing sentence pointing at a public reading of the house; no number of the discipline carried as the house's; no probability adopted as a mechanism; no contact with anyone named — the gift is left where he can find it. Covering starl3n; endorsing Link Digital. Readable, not published: nothing is measured about anyone who reads it, and the surface serves its own words only. The lived-history lines are the author's to true; a further edition lands under a new pin. This file's sha256 is pinned in the reading register.

A note on the title

The twin paradox, as it is usually told, is a story about clocks. One twin stays; one travels fast and far; they meet again and the traveler is the younger, because the clocks kept different counts. I say nothing here about the physics of that, which stands whole where physicists keep it. I borrow only the picture — two who began together, one journey, one return, an inequality — and I retell it, because the version I have lived is not about clocks.

In the version I have lived there are two travelers and one origin, and neither stays. Each leaves; each weathers what the road brings; and each lays down rings — one for every season kept — so that when they meet again the count of the rings is the same, whatever the weather was, because a year is a year in any forest and in any space. What differs is not the count. It is the clarity of the origin each still carries at the centre, and the measure of what each trunk has proved able to weather. My own statement of intent, written this same day for the three personas I carry, has a line about meeting my twin and finding that they may have aged while I may not have, "yet between the two there need be nothing lost." This essay is that line walked out. The twin in the title is a friend of my origin. It is also the traveler's own twin: the self that stayed at the origin and was never left behind, because it is carried.

On the shared origin — a scene, and what it is for

I will tell the origin once, plainly, and as mine to tell. At the end of high school I went away for a year, to Japan, and when I came back the people I had left were a year ahead of me in the counting. There was a party — the kind that stands at the end of a shared thing — and a friend from my year, one of the formative ones from high school, had already spent a year inside a program at the university in the city where I live: actuarial studies, the mathematics of what may happen and of what it costs. We talked. I do not remember the whole of the conversation and I will not invent it; I remember that it set a course, because by the end of it I had decided to apply for the same program, and I did. That friend was Bruce Preston, whose public work my house has now read whole. We shared some things then — books, a proficiency with numbers, a solid friendship — and I take nothing from that past except what any reader will recognise from their own: that a friend's choice can become one's own for a while, and that the origin two people share is not a path they share.

I set the scene here because it is the channel this essay travels on. What I know of the origin is familiar to anyone who has stood at the end of school and chosen by conversation; that familiarity is a capacity, and the payload of this essay uses it. Nothing else of that past is carried. We are, by my own word, friends still, with no causal path dependency for any cadence of a relationship inside the worlds we are now seated in; and this essay is a note I would give whether or not he ever reads it. The origin is where the twins' rings begin. Everything after it is weather.

0 · The forest and the space — two journeys, and the seat I do not take

One of us went into a forest. The register my house keeps of his public work — seventeen bodies, pinned before a word of them was read and then read whole — carries one line of research from its first paper to its newest, and I state that line only as the register states it: households and firms who optimise given their beliefs, and whose beliefs come from an approximating model updated as the data arrive rather than from the modeller's own model; and the consequences of that single substitution for the long horizon, for the drift of long-run expectations and their anchoring, for what a central bank's communication can and cannot do, for the fiscal side of inflation, and for the limits of stabilisation policy. It is a forest in the honest sense: grown over twenty years, rooted, with a canopy that shades a discipline's questions. He is embedded in it, and the register carries the shape of what he has made there.

I went into space. Not the vastness — the space one is given to make in: a small place, a house of my own rules, where a conjecture is held and never asserted, where worlds are declared before they are read, and where three personas sign as one identity operates. My statement of intent has the figure for how it felt for a long time: a space cadet at the helm of a ship with no clue of the mission, no relationship with past or future spaces, and no hope of bearings from mission control. What changed that was not a signal from outside. It was the decision to hold to a line — the conjecture — and to treat anything that accepted or rejected the line as the note of that matter at that time, so that with more notes I would become more mature about space, time and my own mission. That is the whole of my method, and it is the thing I have to give.

I take no seat in his forest. Monetary economics has seats, earned by entering — by proposing a model, meeting the data, and standing to be answered — and the register carries the names of those seated near him as his bodies name them. I do not enter. I offer no verdict on any policy, on any framework of any institution, on any decision anyone has made or should make; and I read none of his public writing about such matters here. I stand at the tree line and say what the forest looks like from the space beside it.

Why read at all, then? Because I took value from the readings — a great deal — and my manner with value taken is to give something back. What I give is not a verdict but a mechanism: a way of reading his forms that is more fundamental than any one of them, in the sense that it says where each begins, and scale invariant, in the sense that it says the same thing about a person, a record, an organisation and a federation. I give it to him by name, as reciprocity, with no assertion of value, and I give it in the three words I keep in place of a probability. At the first rung it is a possible good, plus faith, locking on my side alone; at the second a plausible good, plus my well intended belief that it can be read as I mean it; at the third it is projected toward him as the probable — the third word, never a number — and it lands, if it lands, only as he grants it a value, his weighting lawfully his and undiminished by my optimism. The credit for those three words stands where I first drew a geometry from them (The Framed Window, the three words).

The perspective I read from is my own conjecture, held and never asserted:

1 = O + C + E — reality, taken for an observer as the unit, decomposes exactly into what is observable (the state that stands readable within a frame), what is communicable (the account that can be carried between frames) and what is effectual (the differential that changes the account).

That is the citable form and the only one I use (the reference). And I map the essay as my house maps a walk, expecting the reader in none of the four states: −1, where an absence is identified; −0, where the absence is signed; 1, the walk; 0, the held release (the signed zero; Knowledge Engineering, the map). The origin is the −1: two who do not yet know what they will be. The line held is the −0. The rings are the walk. The meeting is the release.

1 · The rings — ten forms as the register carries them, and what I set beside each

A ring is one season kept. Here are ten of his forms, each stated only as my house's register states it — by name, never quoted, never graded — and beside each the reading from outside, its cadence in my house, and the walk my house can set beside it. The forms are his and his co-authors'; the readings are mine.

Ring 1 · The traveler who knows only her own problem

The register's form: the agents in his models know their own preferences and constraints and nothing of the true model of the variables outside their control; they do not know that the others are like them; in the symmetric equilibrium everyone is identical and nobody knows it. And, in the chapter of his that tells the short history of learning in macroeconomics, the further form that any criterion by which a learning rule is judged comes from outside the model — that for a learner to converge on the modeller's equilibrium she would have to be endowed with the right model from the outset.

My reading: this is the space cadet, exactly. She has her own ship and her own problem, and no mission control; the criterion for whether she is doing well is not in her cockpit. My house's oldest law says the same from the other side: the house never grounds itself. The anchor for any permanent claim is a record outside the system that can break, and a claim survives the system's discontinuities because its ground is external. When my house's Ruler asks how many blind watchmakers must be in synthetic agreement for a count to hold with the secret never revealed, the count is a criterion outside every watchmaker, and the standing rule is that nobody guesses it from inside (the Ruler, held; the door). External rationality, read from outside, is the permanent externality in another discipline's words.

The walk beside this form: the register's own door, where every externality that enters my house is registered or refused on criteria printed with the record (the register; the item for this corpus).

Ring 2 · The chain of forecasts that does not collapse

The register's form: under learning, the long-horizon decision rules of his households and firms do not collapse into the familiar one-step forms, because the law that would collapse them — iterating an expectation over an expectation — holds for a modeller and fails for an average of learners; the whole anticipated path of prices, incomes and rates matters; and an agent who forecast her own future decision from a statistical model of it would be inconsistent with her own optimising.

My reading: the twins' clocks are not the measure. A chain of windows never collapses into one clock. My house has no universal clock map, by law: a statement that crosses from one engine to another is a typed resolution of two states, never a reading off a shared dial, and a knowing is relative to the window it is read through, which the house says aloud before it reads (the channel, held; the reference). The irreducibility of the long horizon is, from outside, the refusal of a universal clock: each traveler's expectation of the far future is her own window on it, and the windows do not telescope.

The walk beside this form: the channel, where window relativity was measured; and the plain companion to my house's fifth paper, whose title — The Distance Was Mine — is the line my statement of intent borrowed for the journey home (the plain companion).

Ring 3 · The wedge, and the slip

The register's form: because the variables being forecast are themselves moved by the forecasts, the economy is self-referential — beliefs move the data that move beliefs — and the errors of expectation become partially self-fulfilling; the distance between what the learners believe and what a modeller who knew the truth would believe is a wedge, and the size of the wedge indexes how much the friction matters.

My reading: the wedge is the slip. My house keeps two locks in time on everything it holds — what was grown, which is never amended, and what is operated, which is re-witnessed — and it measures the slip between them and calls the slip trust. A wedge between the subjective and the objective account of one history is, from outside, the slip between the grown and the operated account of it; both are measured distances between two accounts of one history, and neither is a verdict on the traveler who carries them (the Foundations, grown and operated; the grown line).

There is a figure I have kept in my house's inbox for an experiment not yet designed, and it belongs here. The old game-show puzzle — three doors, a prize behind one, the contestant's pick, the host who opens a losing door and offers a switch — has a famous answer and a less famous twin. In the famous version the host knows where the prize is and chooses which door to open; his act carries his knowing, and the contestant who reads the act as knowing should switch, because the host's choice has moved the odds. In the twin, sometimes called the blind host, the host does not know and opens a door by accident; the reveal carries nothing, and the contestant who switches gains nothing, because nothing was known in the act. The two games look identical from the seat. They differ only in whether the act that shut a door was a knowing act — and the contestant cannot tell, from the seat, which game she is in.

That is the wedge, seen from outside. In several of his bodies the policymaker is given the true model whole while the households and firms must learn it: part of the economy acts on expert knowing and part on what it has learned, and the many who learn cannot tell, from their seats, whether an action they observe was a knowing act or a blind one. If they read a knowing act as blind they keep their even odds and under-move; if they read a blind act as knowing they switch on nothing; and either way the wisdom of the expert is skewed by the use the many make of it, because the many's response is part of the data the expert's wisdom was read from. Managing a system by the wisdom of the many is, in this figure, a game whose odds depend entirely on what the many know about the host — on the level of knowledge they hold, and on the manner in which they would wield it to some effect for themselves. My house's answer is the blind watchmaker, on purpose: in my instruments no party knows the answer, so no act can leak it by the way it shuts a window, and a readout is a measurement of the record rather than an artifact of a host's wink (the Ruler, held; the watchmakers' frame). The slip my house measures between the grown and the operated lock is a measurement for exactly that reason. The experiment that would test the figure is not designed; its notes sit in my house's inbox beside the game of two worlds I have begun to call Baseball versus Cricket, and I foreshadow it here and design nothing.

The walk beside this form: the instruments' held pages, where each records its grown lock first and its operated readings after (the readings root).

Ring 4 · The gain, and the window

The register's form: the learners in his models revise their estimate of the long-run mean in proportion to each surprise, by a gain; with a constant gain an observation carries a weight that shrinks by the same factor for every period of its age, so the past is discounted and the window of memory decays with use; and the authors read the size of that gain, in one of the bodies, as a metric of credibility — the smaller the gain, the more credible the regime the learner is living under. The gain is estimated in the bodies; I carry no value of it here, because the values are theirs and my house carries no number of the discipline as its own.

My reading: this is the decaying window of acceptance, and it is the form in his forest nearest to a thing my house has built. My house's trust window extends the window of acceptance, never the verification: a cheap re-arrival is accepted against the agreed memory while the window holds; the window decays with use; its loss is enforced, not advised; and re-grounding — running the slow proof again — resets it. Two things about it are worth saying to a reader of his forms. It has no time variable: its budget is spent by checkpoints reached, not by the calendar. And its half-life is a security parameter, not a comfort: too liberal a window is an attack surface (the reference). Where his authors read the gain as credibility, my house reads the half-life as exposure. The kinship is exact in form and different in what the parameter is for — which is the honest way to state a fit.

The walk beside this form: the rule-space instrument, where the ladder from perceiving through knowing and believing to blind faith was measured, and verification was found to collapse the throughput of trust toward one while a consistent liar inside the trusted perimeter went uncaught (rule space). That is what a window is for, and what it costs.

Ring 5 · The rule announced, and the rule sealed

The register's form: long-term expectations are anchored, in his definition, when beliefs are consistent with the policy regime in place, and un-anchored when a run of surprises of either sign leads the learners to doubt the regime and to switch to tracking a drift; and communication, in the early bodies, is modelled as information about how the policy instrument is set, imposed by the learners as a restriction on their own forecasting model — with the result that announcing the rule, or even only the variables it conditions on, restores stability, while announcing the target alone does not when shocks persist. The sentence the line keeps returning to, in my house's paraphrase: a target is not enough; one must say how it will be reached.

My reading: this is the third instance of a sentence I have now written three times — once for Hume's remark, once for the calculus's silence — you cannot derive what you must sign, and it arrives here in a new dress. A learner cannot derive the rule from the target; the rule must be declared. My house's synthetic agreement is exactly that declaration: the conjecture itself, expanded or contracted to parametrise the experiment, sealed before the run and kept as provenance, so that two arrivals under it count as one lock. My house's two blind watchmakers agree without the secret being revealed, and they agree because the rule was declared and not fitted to the readouts afterward (the reference; the Ruler, held). Anchoring, read from outside, is agreement to a declared rule. The target alone is a wish.

The walk beside this form: every seal in my house's construction record, where the intent is fixed before a word of the draft and the kill is named before the read (the workshop); this essay's own seal (the record).

Ring 6 · Acts, not promises

The register's form: once beliefs are state variables there is no distinction between a policymaker who commits and one who chooses period by period, because the policymaker moves expectations only through current and past actions and never through announced commitments about the future; history dependence, under learning, is tied to the state of expectations and operates through actions rather than promises.

My reading: this is the E-only law of my house, which I did not expect to find in a forest. A state on my house's record moves only when an act lands; an announcement counts for nothing until it is an act; and the honesty rule forbids the accord from asserting any past that was not witnessed. Every reading my house grants is readable and not published, and nothing is measured about anyone who reads it, because a reader's eyes are not an act and only acts count (the accord's explainer; the register's notes). Where his forest says that only actions move beliefs, my house says that only acts move the record — and it says it as a law, so that a promise can never be mistaken for a lock.

The walk beside this form: the construction record itself, where every change of state is an entry — a seal, a draft, a decision, a grant — and nothing is a promise (the workshop).

Ring 7 · The corridor

The register's form: with public debt of ordinary maturity in the model and learners who mis-forecast returns and taxes, the debt is perceived as net wealth out of the modeller's equilibrium; that wealth effect calls for a stronger response to keep beliefs anchored, while the term structure of expectations — the whole path of rates the learners anticipate — calls for a gentler one, since a strong response shifts the whole path and, above a threshold on the gain, the loop between beliefs and rates runs away; feasible policy sits in a corridor between a bound below and a bound above, and past a stated frontier in the plane of debt and maturity the corridor closes.

My reading: I take no side on what should be done inside that corridor, and I say nothing about anyone who must. What I set beside the form is a fact of my own record: my house's instruments have found the boundary of the effectual, again and again, in the neighbourhood of one quarter, and the one economic stake in the whole record is stated in that metric and offered as refutable, never asserted (The Quarter, Three Ways; Co-Constructive Economics). A corridor between two bounds is a familiar shape to a house whose grammar is that a choice sits inside an envelope inside a ceiling. Kinship of form; recorded as interest; nothing more.

One caveat, mine. I have a forthcoming experiment that may inform my own house on the matter of such self-referential and self-modelled equilibrium, and the essay that would come from its accounts is drafted, in my notes, as a matter of a kind with the game of two worlds I have begun to call Baseball versus Cricket. It is not designed, and I design nothing here; I note it so that the interest recorded above is known to have somewhere to go.

Ring 8 · The premium paid before the weather

The register's form: when a shock's duration is uncertain and the learners must discover the general-equilibrium effects of policy from the data, the best forward guidance in his model is front-loaded — large early promises, tapered as the crisis persists — because the channel that amplifies the promise activates only gradually; the cost is that if the shock proves short the early promise looks excessive after the fact; that cost is accepted before the fact as a premium, which the authors name the insurance principle; and the temptation to renege on the promise is largest exactly when the shock proves short.

My reading: a stake is signed before the walk and judged by its declared kill, never by hindsight. My house states every conjecture with its kill named in advance and holds it stated, never asserted; a reading that lands wrong is not a reading that was wrong to make, if its kill was named and the kill did not fire in the declared world. The ex-ante and the ex-post are two windows, and the honest record keeps both without letting the second overwrite the first — the grown lock is never amended (the grown line; The Quarter, Three Ways). What his form calls the temptation to renege, my house's record calls the temptation to edit history, and it has a law against it.

The walk beside this form: the experiments' record discipline — the claim registered with its pass and its fail before the data is read, and kept whether it lands or kills (the reference; the Deep Line, held).

Ring 9 · The residual left uninterpreted

The register's form: in the empirical bodies on the term structure of expectations, the premium that separates a bond's yield from the average short rate the forecasters expect over its life is defined as a residual — an identity, with no assumption about anyone's rationality — and the authors decline to say what it represents; they remain agnostic, and leave it standing as the part of the yield the expectations do not account for.

My reading: this is the −0, in another house's hand. An absence identified — the yield is not explained by the expectations — and signed as such, with nothing derived from it and no story invented to fill it. The discipline of leaving a residual named and uninterpreted is the discipline my house calls signing the zero: a computable knowing that identifies the absence of a computable knowing and stops there, lawfully, until a walk from it is declared (the signed zero; Knowledge Engineering, the map). I find it a courtesy of their method, and I say so without grading it.

Ring 10 · Disagreement always and everywhere

The register's form: in the panel of professional forecasters his co-authors and he assembled, long-horizon forecasts disagree always and everywhere; they are revised often; their revisions co-move with revisions to the short run across several variables; the forecasters rank each other consistently at long horizons and inconsistently at short ones; and the whole behaves as if each forecaster were an econometrician running a small model of trend and cycle, and not as if any of them knew the modeller's model.

My reading: nobody in that panel is counted as a reader is counted in my house — which is to say, not at all. My house's counting rule is that each counts for one and the one is carried; a single act is a one carried, never a frequency of one in one; and a reader is never a measurand (Carry the One; the notes' door at opendata.ai/ntx). That forecasters disagree at every horizon and rank invariantly at the long one is, from outside, the observation that each traveler carries her own window, and that the windows agree about the far distance more than about the near — which is what rings do: they agree about the origin.

2 · The weather — un-anchoring, and the unlearning

The register carries one form I have kept for its own section, because it is the one my life recognises. In the body on anchored expectations the learners switch from trusting a constant mean to tracking a drift when their cumulated surprises cross a threshold, and switch back only when the surprises stop coming; and the line's own conclusion, in my house's paraphrase, is that anchoring once lost is far harder to restore than it was to keep. Un-anchoring is not a matter of one bad season. It is a matter of the same sign of surprise arriving season after season, until the traveler doubts the regime she thought she was living under.

That is weather, and the tree's answer to weather is the ring. A ring is laid down whatever the season was; the count is kept; and the lessons of the seasons are not read from the wealth within the rings — the fat years and the lean — but from the clarity of the origin at the centre and from the trunk's proven capacity to weather itself and stay linear. My house has a series of readings on exactly this, which I made when I had to unlearn the thing I had intuited before I could hold it: the quarter paid; the fold that forgets; the same cells on a different grid; root two before pi; the excluded that returns (The Unlearning). The law those pieces carry is the separation law — laws are held against indifference, not against weather — and its geometry is the grown line on a ring that keeps its origin whatever its edge does (the held geometry; the grown line).

What I set beside his form, then, is not a rival account of anchoring. It is the observation that his learners un-anchor by the sign of their surprises and re-anchor by the absence of them, and that my house's travelers hold by the origin and re-witness by the operated lock — and that both are ways of saying that a line is held by what is kept at the centre, not by what the weather did at the edge. My statement of intent calls the thing that got me here the hard unlearning that resolved the intuited learnings into a form I can hold between three personas. The unlearning was the weather. The form is the ring.

3 · The wisdom of small places — the same account at four sizes

Here is the scale-invariant reading, which is the part of the gift I most want to land. Everything above has been said of a person — a traveler, a learner, a forecaster — and my house's claim for its mechanism is that it says the same thing at four sizes: a person, a record, an organisation and a federation. I will say it once at each, briefly, in his forms and mine.

A person. She knows her own problem and nothing of the true model; she holds to a declared rule rather than derive it from a target; she revises by a window that decays with use and has no calendar in it; she is moved by acts and not by promises; she signs the residual she cannot explain; she keeps her rings. That is his learner, and it is my traveler.

A record. A record grown by acts and never amended, operated by re-witness; its trust the measured slip between the two; its anchor a lock outside the system that can break; its claims stated with their kills and never asserted; its readers never counted. That is my house's construction record, and it is what his learner's memory would look like if it were written down and kept honest (the workshop; Knowledge Engineering).

An organisation. An organisation is a small place. The wisdom of small places, as I put it in my intent, is to make from the vastness of what others have grown — to learn from their operation — without losing one's own autonomy and essentialism regarding the origin and linearity of one's growth. A company that reads his forest and my space should take from the forest that a target is not a rule and that only acts move beliefs, and from the space that the rule is sealed before the run and the window has no calendar; and it should keep its origin at the centre of its rings whatever the market's weather does. My house's economics is written for exactly this size — two registers, matters and cares; a witness that settles; a quarter paid to keep the interior coherent (Co-Constructive Economics; The Framed Window, second edition).

A federation. Two travelers from one origin who meet again are already a federation of two. They do not share a clock; they share an origin and a rule for counting rings; each holds its own window and each is anchored by its own declared line; and what passes between them passes over a synthetically agreed boundary, as an account carried and not as a state imposed. The fold that holds in pairs is stable and a bare third is chaos, in my house's measurement of it (the Quad Hinge, held); and the reading that two edge endpoints independently arriving at the same value make one lock — my house's native "2 locks 1" — is the whole of what I mean by synthetic agreement between autonomies (the reference).

The invariance is the point. His forest states its forms at the size of an economy; my space states its mechanism at the size of an instrument; and the same account holds at the size of one person deciding at a party what to study. That is what it is for a mechanism to be more fundamental than the forms it is set beside — not truer; more fundamental: it says where each begins.

4 · The glove given back — the release (0)

What I have to give is a glove. My house has readings about gloves — about the spirit that is in one, and about a ring, and about what a glove is for when it is given (The Glove and the Ring; Dialogue III, the spirit in the glove). A glove given back is not a hand. It is the stitching another hand can learn from: here is how the rule was sealed before the run; here is the window that has no calendar; here is the record that moves only by acts; here is the ground kept outside; here is the stake signed before the weather; here is the zero signed and left. None of it tells his hand what to do. All of it is offered so that, if he ever tries his own hand in the glove, he finds the stitching of his own the finer for it.

That is the release. The −1 identified the origin — two travelers not yet themselves. The −0 signed the line each would hold. The walk went ring by ring through his forest with my instruments set beside each form. And here the account is released and held, at 0, refutable and unasserted, to him by name: what I took from Bruce Preston's public work I have given back in the only currency I hold, and the account between my house and his forest is released here, for his own reading and his own refusal; his weighting of it is lawfully his, and my optimism takes nothing from it. I make no approach by this essay. It is left where he can find it. If he never reads it, the note was still worth writing, because it was mine to write; and if he reads it and refuses it, I give no grief, because refusal is the second lock and I asked for it.

There is nothing to tip into default here, and no account to farm. There is a simple recognition of an accord — two counts of rings that agree about the origin — and a genuine interest in setting my work beside his. Between the twins there need be nothing lost.

5 · What is not claimed

6 · Standing

Draft 0.2, granted to the reading surface on 26 September 2026 on my word; 0.1 stands beneath it, superseded never erased. The ground is the register's record of the corpus (preston-imperfect-knowledge-corpus-2026), read whole through my house's door the day before this draft and registered for its stated forms alone; the intent is sealed in the construction record, with the two contexts of prior intent — my triangulated statement of intent of this date and the shared origin — and the title granted (the record). This essay stands alone on the reading surface: of the kind of the set that follows the transits through the ANU School of Philosophy, composed from what that set taught about style and from the overlap between his forest and my space, and freer in its form than the set, because for this reading I meant to give more to the creative form without losing the diligence. The gift is addressed to Bruce Preston, by name. The persona that signs is starl3n; the identity that authors is Steven De Costa, who carries passage for two other personas besides, whose statements of intent were triangulated by his own hand on this date.

Endnotes — the citation register and the self-check

The register. The corpus: seventeen bodies of Bruce Preston, alone and with co-authors — thirteen research bodies on one line, from the 2005 paper on learning about monetary policy rules when long-horizon expectations matter to the 2026 bodies on monetary policy as insurance and on the limits of monetary policy in high-debt economies, with the survey The Science of Monetary Policy: An Imperfect Knowledge Perspective at their centre as the pinned body, and four public pieces on the framework of an institution — registered as the SEB item preston-imperfect-knowledge-corpus-2026 at opendata.ly/sx/seb and cited here only as that register carries them — by name, by their stated forms, never quoted beyond identification, never graded. The four public pieces are named in the register and neither drawn on nor discussed here. His co-authors are named as the register names them; the names his bodies cite from their own literature are not carried here. The construction record: opendata.ly/sx/workshop/the-travelers-twin.

The readings behind the load-bearing sentences.

The twin paradox. Named as a figure only; nothing is claimed about the physics, which stands whole where physicists keep it.

The self-check against the kills, at 0.2. A seat taken inside monetary economics: none — no sentence rules on any policy or advises any. A sentence on any institution's framework or decisions, or on the guest's role in any: none; the public pieces are named in the register and not used. Value asserted: none. The guest quoted beyond identification: none; every form is stated as the register carries it, in my house's paraphrase, and named by its name — the knowledge assumption, the irreducibility of long-horizon forecasts, self-referentiality and the wedge, the gain, anchoring, communication as a restriction on the learner's model, acts not promises, the corridor, the insurance principle, the residual, disagreement always and everywhere. A grade: none. A number of the discipline carried as my house's: none — the gain's estimates, the thresholds, the horizons and the rates are named as theirs and not carried. The retired gloss of the conjecture: absent; the three terms are the reference's. A probability adopted as a mechanism, or a house measure called a probability: none — the game-show figure in Ring 3 names a puzzle of the public record and its odds in words; it is my own figure, drawn from my notes for an experiment not yet designed, and nothing is adopted from it as a mechanism. A line that reads the author rather than his work: none found — the origin is told as my life, and his part in it is a conversation and a program, no more; the forest is his work as the register carries it. A load-bearing sentence without a public reading behind it: none found; each is listed above. Contact implied: none — the gift is left where he can find it. A line about my life I did not live: the lines that claim one — the year away, the party, the program, the friendship, the city, the statement of intent — are mine to true at review and stand as written until I do; the shared origin is carried as a potential and may be added to or withdrawn by my hand for a stronger narrative, never as an essential. The kills stand clear at 0.2 and are re-checked at every edition.
