The Column With No Name

An outside reading of decision under limited awareness, from 1 = O + C + E.

Steven De Costa, writing as starl3n · Canberra · 27 September 2026

THE READING PLAQUE. The Column With No Name — draft 0.3, made readable on the SX surface by its covering persona's reading grant; a draft, not the published form; the author's grant word, verbatim: "That gets a reading grant on the SX surface and push it." The construct was established 2026-09-27, on Steven De Costa's acceptance of the summation registered on the SEB item steele-awareness-corpus-2026 — five bodies of Katie Steele, read whole and registered as an alignment object — and on his word that the two points of intent he gave at the Russell acceptance stand for this set, with the intent sealed before a word of the draft: an essay from the outside domain, not a seat inside normative decision theory; reciprocity and gifting, no assertion of value, to the person named. The second essay of a set — the readings that follow the transits through the ANU School of Philosophy, collected under the draft title On the Vitality of Reason as Material Cares; the set described once, in the first essay, and inherited here; the philosophy the set carries named by its author Co-Constructive Optimism. Three editions in one day: 0.1 the essay laid; 0.2 at his review, the passage on optimism rewritten — co-constructive optimism as a creator-and-observer referential autonomy, the second lock as carrying the one, the present-past not his; 0.3 at his review, the critic named in place of the critique with the cross-link to the house's story of its own honest zero, the honest zero written into the release and the standing, and the open letter refused — the guest named so that the release is honest, no response needed or wanted. The citation discipline: the corpus cited only as /sx/seb carries it, the manuscript cited as a manuscript, never quoted beyond identification, never graded; the conjecture 1 = O + C + E cited in its reference's three terms; every load-bearing sentence pointing at a public reading of the house; no probability adopted as a mechanism; no climate or policy verdict; no contact with any thinker named — the gift is left where she can find it, and nothing is carried toward her. Covering starl3n; endorsing Link Digital. Readable, not published: nothing is measured about anyone who reads it, and the surface serves its own words only. The naming is the author's at review; a further edition lands under a new pin. This file's sha256 is pinned in the reading register.

A note on the title

There is a table in the manuscript my house registered — Katie Steele's, with H. Orri Stefánsson, on reasoning with unknown possibilities — that has a column headed with two question marks. The rows are the acts a person can take. The other columns are the ways the world might turn out that she can articulate. The last column is the one she cannot: a place kept at the table for a contingency she suspects is there and cannot yet describe. The manuscript calls it a subjective catch-all, and is careful to say what it is not — not a proposition standing for every possibility she is unaware of, which no one can conceive from inside, but an abstract placeholder for a class of contingencies she expects later to fill in.

The column in my title is that column, read from outside. It has a place and no content. In the map my house draws it is the state called −1: an absence identified and not yet signed. What the guest does with the column — she gives it a probability and a utility, so that it can weigh in a decision — is her mechanism and stays hers. What my house does with its −1 — it signs it, without a value — is mine. The kinship is the admission: both of us set a place before we know what will sit there.

There is a self-reference in the title, as there was in the essay before this one, and I own it now. That essay closed by signing the next essay before it was written — a member of the set with a place and no measure, its count known to be absent, its content unknown. That was a column with no name. This essay is what was in it. The zero the first essay signed was the set's own; the column the second essay names is the set's own too, and it is filled by being written.

0 · The stake, not the seat

Normative decision theory has seats. Ramsey, Savage and Jeffrey sat in the founding ones; von Neumann and Morgenstern before them; Karni and Vierø, Bradley, Buchak, Mahtani and the rest sit in the living debate over what a rational agent owes to her own future awareness; and Katie Steele, whose manuscript, encyclopaedia entry, chapter and two papers my house read whole, sits among them, holding cares and notes lawfully and answerable to the others for what she holds. A seat in that discourse is earned by entering it: by proposing a norm, meeting the counterexamples, and standing to be answered. I do not enter. I take no seat and offer no verdict on which norm of belief revision is right, on whether expected utility is the measure of rational choice, on whether the sophisticated or the resolute chooser is the rational one, on what discounting is rational, on whether a climate model may be calibrated and confirmed by the same data, or on any decision that any of this bears on. I stand at the rail, stake nothing, and say what the ground looks like from outside.

Why read at all, then? Because I took value from the readings — five bodies of one author, read whole and registered through my house's own door before a word of this essay was written — and my manner with value taken is to give something back. What I give is not a verdict but a mechanism: a way of reading decision under limited awareness that is more fundamental than any one norm, in the sense that it says where every norm begins, and scale invariant, in the sense that it says the same thing about a person, a record, an organisation and a federation. I offer it as reciprocity, with no assertion of value. If it is useful to those seated inside, the reading was worth it. If it is not, the refusal is theirs to make and I give no grief.

The gift has an addressee, and I will not leave her unnamed behind the word "discourse". The author my house registered is a person, Katie Steele, personified within my house by the summation my door registered on her work and by the intent I sealed after it. In my map she is the −1 this essay walks toward: an absence identified — my house held no computable knowing of her direction until it read her whole — which the signing of this essay begins to fill, and whose release at the close must release her too, by name, or it is no release at all. So the parcel this essay carries — a computable knowing built from my house's own rules and manners, with its cares and its matters in the form of the essay itself — is given in direct faith, with well intended belief, for her own reading. Reciprocity to a discourse is a gesture. Reciprocity to a person is a debt paid, and I pay it to her — and a debt paid is closed. It asks nothing back. I name her so that the release at the close is honest, not so that she will answer; the naming is the honesty of the release, and the release is the whole of what is carried toward her.

The ladder the gift climbs was written out in the essay before this one and I carry it here in short, with its credit where I first drew a geometry from the three words (The Framed Window, the three words): a possible good, plus faith, locking on my side alone; a plausible good, plus my well intended belief that it can be read as I mean it; and the probable good — the third word, never a number — which this public reading is attenuated toward and which lands, if it lands, only as a reader locks it.

I should say what the optimism in that ladder is, because the short form above does not carry it. When I say that I make these readings by co-constructive optimism I mean a creator-and-observer referential autonomy — a practice that is, in large part, self-referential. This essay is my own observer origin's projection, toward the externality I am observing in Katie Steele's work, of a good-faith co-construction that embeds within its own autonomy, as a reading, an optimism that may carry. It may not. I may fail, or be too clever by half, and the packet may drop: what I try to carry in this essay may never become the co-constructive optimisation it would be if Katie Steele, or any other reader, became a second lock for it. That second lock is what my house means by carrying the one (carry the one): the moment when the co-constructive optimism of my emerging present locks into the co-constructed optimisation of the present-past. What is telling is that the present-past is not mine. It is an optimisation, and it belongs to whoever locked it. What remains local to me — my own observer-referential optimism as the maker of the essay — is not diminished by whether she or anyone else reads it or assigns it any value. I can only be adjudicated by a critic who shows up — the occupant of a seat that may stay empty, as my house's story of its own honest zero says plainly: to refuse you, a critic has to show up, and there is no argument against indifference (Who Cares?). Allowing for such a seat as may be taken is part of how the essay is built; calling anyone to it is not. It is authored as an addressable identity, operated through a persona, and when it is accepted for a public medium it will be granted its surface and published in the commons.

The perspective I read from is my own conjecture, held and never asserted:

1 = O + C + E — reality, taken for an observer as the unit, decomposes exactly into what is observable (the state that stands readable within a frame), what is communicable (the account that can be carried between frames) and what is effectual (the differential that changes the account).

That is the citable form, and the only form I use here. It is stated in my public reference and earned inside declared experimental worlds, and I claim nothing for it beyond its apparatus.

I map the essay as I map a walk, and I expect the reader in none of the four states: −1, where an absence is identified; −0, where the absence is signed; 1, the walk; 0, the held release. The column with no content is the −1. Its signing is the −0. The discourse's own lawful traffic, read from outside, is the walk. What the careful planner does is the release.

1 · The absence that is forcibly absent (−1)

The register's form: the manuscript closes under a line of Wittgenstein's it names by its number and reads for its own purpose — those things of which one is unaware are forcibly absent from one's reasoning. It distinguishes two conditions. In the first, unawareness of unawareness, the agent does not even suspect that something is missing, and the missing thing can play no role in what she decides. In the second, awareness of unawareness, she suspects it, cannot articulate it, and gives it the column. The manuscript gives the second condition a great deal of attention and the first almost none, and it says why: from the perspective of decision-making the first is of no interest, because nothing can be done with it.

My reading: the two conditions are two states, and the map my house drew for another purpose places them exactly. Unawareness of unawareness has no state; my house has no name for what has not been identified, and neither does the guest. Awareness of unawareness is the −1: an absence identified. The column with no content is what the −1 looks like when it is drawn at a table. I want to say plainly, as I said of another absence in the essay before this one, that the −1 is an honest state. An agent who has kept a column for what she cannot describe is not yet wrong about anything. She has identified an absence — there is no computable knowing here — and has not yet signed it. The discourse sometimes treats the column as an embarrassment, a thing a proper model would not need; the manuscript does not, and neither does my house, which has a state for it, a name, and a map that places it before the mechanism rather than beneath it (the signed zero; Knowledge Engineering, the map).

Now the finding that the whole manuscript turns on, stated as the register states it. Reverse Bayesianism — the rule that the ratios of the old possibilities' probabilities survive a growth in awareness — is not a general requirement of rationality; the manuscript refutes it with three cases, two by expansion and one by refinement, and refuses the rescues. Awareness Rigidity, the weaker rule its defenders take as fundamental, falls with it. What remains is stated as sufficient conditions and not as a norm. In the manuscript's own sentence, which I name and do not quote, there is no general norm of belief revision for awareness growth.

My reading: nothing in the old context derives the new credence. It is not that the candidate norms are weak; it is that the weight of a new possibility is not the kind of thing the old weights derive, as the ought was never the kind of thing a descriptive premise derived, and the first probability was never the kind of thing the calculus derived. You cannot derive what you must sign — I wrote it of Hume's remark, and again of the calculus's silence on the initial assignment, and I find the third instance here, on the guest's plane: the credence of the column, once it has content, is signed by the agent in her new context and derived from nothing in her old one. Three essays, three absences, one line. That is a chord, and I record it at the close.

2 · The column signed (−0)

An is is an O: a state that stands readable within a frame. The column with no content is not an is; nothing stands in it. Giving it a place is the identification. Giving it a source — declaring where the anticipation comes from, which is what the manuscript does when it says that novelty and complexity are the guides by which a person learns when to expect her awareness to grow — is the signing. The −0 is the absence signed: the planner declares, before she decides, that she is the kind of agent who keeps a column, and why, and under what conditions she will fill it. In the manuscript the signed column then carries a probability and a utility and weighs in the expectation, so that an agent can turn down an act she prefers on every contingency she can articulate, because of the one she cannot. In my house the signed column carries nothing; its signing is the act, and the walk from it is lawful without a number. I state the difference at its bound and claim no identity across it. The kinship is that both of us find, where a derivation was expected, an act.

Now the manuscript's model of what awareness is, because it is where the mechanism becomes precise. An awareness context is a finite set of basic propositions; the possibilities are the truth functions over them the agent takes to be consistent; a proposition is not a set of possible worlds but a function from contexts to sets of possibilities, so that the same sentence is associated with different possibilities before and after a growth. Growth adds propositions — expansion adding possibilities without lengthening any, refinement lengthening all — and nothing is contracted.

My reading: an awareness context is a declared world, and a growth in awareness is a new one. My house seals a world before it reads it: the propositions are fixed at the seal, the kill is named before the run, and a run in one world never fixes a value in another. When a new proposition must be admitted, a new world is declared and sealed again; the old world's readouts are its own and are not carried across as if they were the new world's. That is the shape of the manuscript's finding, from outside: the reason no general norm survives is that the two contexts are two worlds, and what is signed in the second is not derived in the first. The order of the signing is the kinship (the LDD reference, §1; the XOR from the a-priori; the deep line, the mechanism and the signed zero).

And now the manuscript's reason for refusing the other kind of catch-all — the one that would stand for every possibility the agent is unaware of. It is refused for the agent's own perspective because, to make sense of it, she would need the universal set of possibilities, relative to which the catch-all is the complement of what she can articulate; and she has no access to that set, and it may not even be a coherent notion. A footnote thanks Alan Hájek for this way of putting the problem — the guest of the essay before this one, standing in a footnote of this one, which is how an ecology of thinkers looks from the inside of a bibliography.

My reading: that is the permanent externality, in the guest's words. My house never grounds itself. It keeps two locks on one, never one on itself; it anchors every permanent claim outside its own record; and in the instrument where it asked how few blind watchmakers must agree for a count to be true, the count is made true without the watchmakers ever knowing the number, and the number is never revealed (the Ruler, held; opendata.ai/rlx). The universal set is inaccessible from inside, and my house is built as though it knew that about itself. The guest's reason for refusing the catch-all from inside is my house's reason for its principle, and I record it as the deepest kinship in the corpus.

3 · The discourse's lawful traffic — the walk (1)

Here are ten forms as the register carries them from Katie Steele's five bodies, each with my reading from outside, its cadence in my house, and the walk my house can set beside it. The forms are hers and I state them only as the register states them; the readings are hers, the cadences mine.

3.1 · Expansion, refinement and the carried one

The register's form: awareness grows in two ways — by expansion, when a new possibility is admitted that lengthens none of the old ones and leaves some of them standing, and by refinement, when every old possibility is split along a property newly recognised and none survives unchanged — and in mixtures of the two; the rent-or-buy tables draw both.

My reading: expansion is the carried one, and refinement is the grain. My house counts by the rule that each counts for one and the one is carried, N = (N − 1) + 1, and a new column is a one carried into the count. A refinement changes the grain at which the count is read — one in n becoming one in 2n — and my house's readouts keep the observable, the carried term and the effect as separate fields so that a change of grain is never mistaken for a change of count. What the manuscript separates as two kinds of growth my house separates as the count and its grain.

The walk beside this form: the essay on the carried one (carry the one); the notes, where a readout is a resolved act and never a tally (Knowledge Engineering, the notes; the door at opendata.ai/ntx).

3.2 · No general norm, and the third instance

The register's form: as stated in section 1 — Reverse Bayesianism and Awareness Rigidity refuted as general norms; Restricted Reverse Bayesianism stated as sufficient conditions, local rigidity plus evidential irrelevance, which secure the conclusion as a matter of logic and so cannot be a norm.

My reading: the discourse asked for a rule and found a description. My house has met that turn before. Where the discourse looked for the rule by which the new credence follows from the old, my house says the new credence is signed in a new declared world, and the only rule is the order — seal before read, sign before walk. The sufficient conditions the manuscript keeps are, from outside, a description of the cases where the new world happens to agree with the old on a pair of propositions; my house would call that agreement a fit of form between two worlds, and it would measure it rather than require it.

The walk beside this form: the two essays where the line was first drawn (Sane Max Rides Hume's Highway; The Zero That Is Signed); the deep line's laws, where every value on a record is computed inside its declared world and none is carried across (the deep line, the laws as they stand).

3.3 · The stable agent

The register's form: the manuscript offers a third reading of conditionalisation beside the transition and the planning readings — that it is not a substantive norm at all but a description of what it is to remain the same agent upon learning; an agent who revises otherwise is not irrational, she is simply not the same agent, and there may be something regrettable in predicting that of oneself. It applies the same reading to awareness growth: there is no general account of what it is to be the same agent across it.

My reading: the stable agent is a standing wave, and coherence is the tax it pays to remain one. I wrote that of the identity that authors this set, in the essay before this one, when I wrote its debt into the accounting: three personas, one identity that signs as it operates, owing a triangulated statement of intent to the externality that grants it its autonomy. The manuscript's third reading is, from outside, the same accounting: the norm is what remaining oneself costs, and an agent who declines to pay it has not broken a rule, she has become someone else. My house's essay on two travelers and one origin says the same of rings — the same count in any weather, the origin's clarity the only difference — and the reading on the unlearning says what a ring keeps when it keeps its origin.

The walk beside this form: the essay on the twin (The Traveler's Twin); the ring that keeps its origin (The Unlearning); the accounting of the identity, in the essay before this one (The Zero That Is Signed, the carried debt).

3.4 · The more aware self, and two locks in time

The register's form: Awareness Reflection — if you predict that between now and a later time the only thing that will happen is that you gain more awareness, your credence now should equal your expected credence then; informally, defer to someone exactly like you except more aware. The manuscript gives a four-bet Dutch book against the agent who violates it, weakens it where the conditional is undefined, shows it strictly weaker than the planning form of Reverse Bayesianism, and extends it to preference: paying to bind oneself against a more aware self is irrational in a way that other binding is not.

My reading: the more aware self is a lock in time. My house keeps two locks in time by construction — what was grown and what is operated — and measures the slip between them, and calls the slip trust. Where the manuscript forbids the expected slip for the same agent, my house measures the actual slip and lets trust decay by it; the Dutch book is what a measured slip looks like when someone else is holding the other end of it. I claim no identity between the principle and the engine; the fit is that both place the later self where the earlier self must answer to it.

The walk beside this form: the two locks in time as the Foundations state them, grown and operated, on the held pages of the instruments (the readings root); the operated surfaces as Knowledge Engineering lists them (the operated); the trust window that carries no time variable, in the essay on the twin (The Traveler's Twin).

3.5 · Ulysses, and the seal in the outcome

The register's form: three ways to walk a decision tree — naively, assuming every path is open; sophisticatedly, planning backwards from what one predicts one will choose at each later node; resolutely, honouring at each node the plan chosen at the first. The chapter and the entry hold that resolute choice, taken literally, defies the very meaning of preference; that any weight an agent places on honouring a commitment belongs in the description of the final outcomes and so in her preferences at the time; and, from the manuscript, that binding oneself is rational when the binder is not less aware than the bound.

My reading: this is the seal, and it tells me which of the three my house is. My house signs its kill before the run and walks with the kill inside the outcome. It does not choose against its preference at the later node, because the preference already contains the seal — the kill is part of what is walked, written into the outcome exactly where the register says integrity concerns belong. So the house is sophisticated, never resolute; and it binds its kills, never its readouts, which is the manuscript's condition met: the self that seals is not less aware than the self that reads, because sealing is the only act the earlier self takes. The sane rider signs where he is going before he sets off; Ulysses has the mast, and the sophisticated table has a state for what he will want when he hears the song.

The walk beside this form: the door where every registration seals before it reads (opendata.ly/sx/seb); the kills named in advance on every construction record, this one's included (the construction record); the rider's order, in the first essay of the manner (Sane Max Rides Hume's Highway).

3.6 · The dominated strategy and the die

The register's form: the dynamic setting is a controlled experiment on preferences that violate Independence — the sophisticated agent with such preferences chooses a strategy that another strategy dominates, made unavailable to her by her own stable preferences; the dominating-strategies criterion rules such preferences out, and Skyrms's diachronic Dutch book is the same criterion turned on the belief-update rule. The entry adds that agents outside expected utility may pay to avoid free evidence.

My reading: my house decides by dominance and never by expectation, and it throws no die. Every act it takes is decided by declared rules — a ceiling that contains an envelope that contains a choice — and its watchmakers, when they agree, agree synthetically. A strategy made unavailable by one's own preferences is, from outside, a run that was never an act: the house's reason for keeping chance devices out of its acts is that once a die decides, nothing is left to choose, and the dominated strategy is what is left when the choosing has been given away. The guest's controlled experiment is the shape of the house's mode, seen from a seat.

The walk beside this form: the Ruler, where agreement is made without a throw (the Ruler, held); the essay before this one, where the die that dissolves the maximum was walked (The Zero That Is Signed, the die).

3.7 · Double-counting, and the pin

The register's form: the paper on climate models argues that using the same evidence to calibrate a model and to confirm it is not the sin it is taken to be — calibration just is the comparison of a base model's instances by their likelihoods, and the same evidence lawfully confirms one base model relative to another; the sin is to update twice on old evidence, and the remedy for that is not separate data but priors that do not already contain it; and separate data are no remedy at all for the real worries, which are relevance and the catch-all.

My reading: the second lock is in time, not in data. My house pins a body before it reads it and then reads it against the pin — the same bytes twice, lawfully, because the second reading is a verification and not a second update. Its grown lock and its operated lock are separated by time and by a declared kill, never by a held-out partition of the evidence. The paper's finding that the separate-data rule cures nothing is, from outside, the finding that a lock is a moment and a declaration, not a slice of the data; and its rule against the second update is the house's needle law — a needle is never reworded, and a signal is never compared twice as if it were new.

The walk beside this form: the ingress procedure's seal before the read, as the register carries it (opendata.ly/sx/seb); the Foundations, where the two locks in time are stated on every held page (the readings root).

3.8 · Relevance, and the window

The register's form: whether past data bear on a model's adequacy for the future is a question apart from double-counting — if the past values are independent of the future values, there is no calibration to be had and separate data are no remedy; climate scientists disagree about how far this applies, and the paper takes no side.

My reading: whether a lock grown in one window binds another is window relativity, and a window is declared, not found. My house's readings are window-relative by construction, and the house says the window aloud before it reads. The paper's separate question is, from outside, the question my house answers by writing the window on the record: which past this lock was grown in, and which future it is asked to bind.

The walk beside this form: the channel, where window relativity was measured (the channel, held); the framed window, where the surface a knowing is read through is itself the subject (The Framed Window, the surface).

3.9 · The likelihood that cannot be evaluated

The register's form: non-comparative confirmation — confidence in a model relative to its whole complement — needs the likelihood of the evidence on the catch-all, "none of the above", and that likelihood is very difficult to evaluate; under radical uncertainty about the future the confirmation is indeterminate, and confidence in any model, or in the whole set, cannot rise.

My reading: where the guest finds the likelihood inevaluable, my house declines to evaluate it, and the two refusals have the same shape. The house does not value an identified absence; it signs it as a −0 or leaves it standing at −1, and no number for it goes off the record. In place of the number it keeps three words — possible, plausible, probable — and says which one, and the credit for the words stands where I first drew a geometry from them. The paper's indeterminacy is, from outside, the honest state of a house that has a column and no number for it, and says so.

The walk beside this form: the three words (The Framed Window, the three words); the honesty rule, that no number leaves a record that cannot carry it, on every surface the house serves in the effectual mode (the readings root).

3.10 · Consistency, not the curve

The register's form: among Stationarity, Consistency and Invariance, any two imply the third; an agent may be immune to sure loss while discounting non-exponentially, by violating Invariance rather than Consistency, and Margot, who loves oysters this week and not next, does; the reply reads Invariance not as a norm but as a fixed point of modelling — the assumption under which the role of time distance, as against calendar date, can be read off a stable agent's preferences — and restates the received view so that, within a time-discounted model of such an agent, one form alone is consistent. Strotz, it finds, meant this all along.

My reading: the norm is that preference not depend on the vantage point, and the curve is what falls out once the window is fixed. My house keeps no universal clock, declares its window and counts it in acts, and holds that a standing must not depend on who reads it or when; its trust window carries no time variable. Invariance read as a fixed point is, from outside, the declaration of the window — the modeller's job, as the reply says, is to find the invariant representation, which is my house's rule that the window is written down before the reading. I claim nothing about the exponential form; the kinship is the fixed point, not the curve.

The walk beside this form: window relativity (the channel, held); the reference's rule that there is no universal clock and that every cross-frame statement is a typed resolution of state (the LDD reference); the trust window with no time variable (The Traveler's Twin).

3.11 · Ten forms, one column

Set side by side, the ten forms say one thing from outside. The old context is silent about the new credence; the sufficient conditions describe and do not command; the stable agent is a description of a cost; the more aware self is a lock the earlier self must answer to; the resolute plan is either in the outcome or it is no preference; the dominated strategy is a run given away; the second update is the sin and the second data set is no cure; relevance is a window; the catch-all's likelihood has no number; the curve follows the fixed point. In every case the discourse has found a place where a derivation was expected and none was available, and has filled it with a norm, a condition, a fixed point, a criterion — with a seat. My house fills it with a signing, declared before the read. And where the discourse gives the missing thing a column, my house gives it a state, and the two agree on the one thing that matters: the place is kept before the content is known.

4 · Scale over locks — the same account at every size

The mechanism says the same thing at every size, from any of the three perspectives I hold — external, internal, and on the exchange over a synthetically agreed boundary.

A person. Before she decides she keeps a column for what she cannot describe, and there is no shame in it: that is her −1. If she signs it — declares that she is the kind of agent who expects to learn more, and why, and when she will fill the column — she is at −0, and the decision is her walk. She defers to her more aware self only as the same agent; she binds her kills and not her readouts; she lets the same evidence seal and verify and never updates twice; she keeps no number for the column and says which of three words she holds.

A record. A record's proposition set is fixed at its seal or it is not a record. A new proposition needs a new seal and a new world; the old world's readouts stay its own. Its counts are acts carried, and a change of grain is not a change of count; its window is written on it; its catch-all is never valued. My house's records are made so, and a reader can check any of them from two directions without asking the house (the deep line, the laws as they stand).

An organisation. The manuscript reads scenario planning and horizon scanning as implicit techniques for anticipating awareness growth — coverage of the possibility space whether or not every detail can yet be specified. From outside, that is an organisation keeping a column with no name at its table, which is the honest thing, and the dishonest thing is to fill it with a number so that the planning can proceed as if it were not there. An organisation has two locks in time whether it knows it or not, what it grew and what it operates; the slip between them is measurable, and my house measures it and calls it trust (Co-Constructive Economics, where the two registers — matters and cares — are drawn and the witness settles what the signing owed).

A federation. A federation cannot see its own universal set any more than a person can. It agrees or it does not, and my house's instruments say that a fold in pairs holds and a bare third does not (the quad hinge, held). Agreement among blind watchmakers is made without the count being known, and the smallest number of them that makes the count true is the federation's question, not its assumption (the Ruler, held). A federation that values its catch-all has pretended to a set it cannot see; one that keeps the column and signs it has kept its externality permanent.

That is the scale invariance I promised: not that a person is a federation, but that the mechanism — keep the column, sign it, declare the window, seal before the read, keep two locks in time, refuse the second update and the die, value no absence, hold until refuted — is the same instruction at each size, and that each size can be read from each perspective without changing a word.

5 · What the careful planner does — the release (0)

The manuscript ends on a driver who cannot see the potholes and drives defensively anyway, and on a search for norms that may, it admits, be a search for the holy grail. Read from outside, both are right about the form and say nothing I need to adjudicate about the content. The careful planner keeps a column for what she cannot see. She signs it — says where her anticipation comes from — before she decides, and gives it no number that would let her pretend the pothole was not there. She declares the window she reads through. She keeps two locks in time and lets the same evidence seal and verify but never update twice. She defers to her more aware self as the same agent, and binds her kills and never her readouts. And then she holds what she finds without asserting it, at rest without surrender of seat — the posture I called Sane Max two essays ago — and when a countermodel arrives at the door she lets it in.

That posture is the release. The −1 identified the absence and gave it a column; the −0 signed it; the walk went through the discourse's lawful traffic and set my house's instruments beside each form; and here the account is released and held, at 0, refutable and unasserted. The release has a name in it. What I took from Katie Steele's five bodies I have given back in the only currency I hold, and the account between my house and her work is released here, to her, for her own reading, her own refusal, or a critic who shows up; whether she locks it is hers, and what remains local to me is not diminished either way.

The release returns me to 0, and I want to say what that zero is, because my house wrote it as a story before it wrote it as a rule (Who Cares?): a count that stood at zero, written down rather than dressed up, and kept on the books permanently as a baseline and not a confession — a reading of the street, not a verdict on the work; acts, never eyes; no target. An honest zero in an essay of this kind means that the walk from −1 through −0 and 1 ends here with nothing carried toward anyone. If I had left something out of the work that would make me need, or want, a response, that would be my own absence — mine to know better, to sign for upon myself, and to put into the works, not into an obligation carried toward her or toward any reader. The optimism the essay holds is held by that zero: it expects nothing, it counts no eyes, and it is not diminished by an empty seat. It is also, I notice, the infant's second word. Co-Constructive Optimism is optimism beyond the frame, carried only with a literal premise — my house's contributed frames measured that, and refused the optimism that arrived without one (the unseated frame; the watchmakers' frame). The literal premise here is the column with no name, admitted. The optimism is the walk from it: that the column will be filled, and that what fills it will be signed and not derived.

6 · What is not claimed

7 · The carried debt — the next essay, signed before it is written

Before this essay closes I sign the next. I do not know its measure — what its guest's forms will do to my house's, whether my door will register or refuse them, which chord will ring and which will not — but I know the absence of its count within the set: there is a next, and it is not yet written. That absence is the −1 at this close. It is also the +1 in time. N = (N − 1) + 1 is the rule my house counts by, and this essay is the N − 1 that the next will take as its memory, as this one took the essay before it — which signed this one unwritten, as a column with no name, and was right that it would be filled. The set owes one more, and the one is carried.

The chords that rang true here, for the record of the set, and they now ring across three essays. The first: Hume's remark, the calculus's silence and the column with no content — three absences on one plane, one summation apart each time, and one line for all of them: you cannot derive what you must sign. The second: decision under uncertainty in the essay before this one, dominance and the dominating-strategies criterion here, and the rest state I called Sane Max before either — deciding with no number, holding without asserting. The third: the mixed strategy that dissolved the maximum there, and the dominated strategy that a sophisticated agent's own preferences make unavailable here — a die dissolves the act, and a run given away is not an act. The fourth: the missing yardstick there, and the more aware self here — the second lock, and the later self as a lock in time. The fifth, new in this essay: the universal set inaccessible from inside, which my house had as a principle and now hears as a reason.

The discordances, which I leave standing rather than resolve: the guest's column carries a probability and a utility and my house's state carries neither; the manuscript forbids the expected slip for the same agent and my house measures the actual slip and lets trust decay by it; the paper defends double-counting on the data and my house separates its locks in time. Each of these rests lawfully as an autonomy of its own — possible in the first, plausible in the second, probable in the third, by my reading and by no one else's — and the next essay may find the chord that resolves one of them, or may find another discordance. That is what it is for a set to be read rather than planned.

There is a second debt, carried outside the set, and its accounting was opened in the essay before this one: the persona that signs is starl3n; the identity that authors is Steven De Costa, which carries passage, at present, for two other personas as well — LinkDigital, which endorses this essay and every reading my house grants, and the Chairman, under whom my house holds its matters of business; and the identity owed to the externality that grants it its autonomy an updated and triangulated statement of intent for each of the three, by my own hand. That debt was discharged, by my own hand, on 26 September 2026, before the first essay was granted its reading; the three statements stand updated as a triangulation of concerns, where the statements of intent stand (opendata.ly/sx/atlas). I carry it into this essay as discharged, and I say so here rather than let it go unmentioned, because the accounting is the point: the set walks under the weather, the coherence and the will of the identity that signs as it operates, and it says what it walks under at every close.

8 · Standing

Draft 0.3, on the docs shelf, standing for review; 0.2 and 0.1 beneath, superseded never erased; granted to no surface. The ground is the register's record of the corpus and the summation accepted on it; the intent is the two points I gave at the Russell acceptance, which stand for this set by my word. This is the second essay of the set, the column the first essay signed with no name; the next is signed by its close. The guest is named — Katie Steele — so that the release is honest, and the release returns me to 0: the account on this side is closed, nothing is carried toward her, and no response is needed or wanted; what I might find myself wanting from any reader is my own absence, mine to sign and to put into the next work. The persona that signs is starl3n; the identity that authors is Steven De Costa, who carries passage for two other personas besides, and whose debt to their statements of intent is discharged and carried here as discharged. The naming is mine at review.

Endnotes — the citation register and the self-check

The register. The corpus: five bodies of Katie Steele — Beyond Uncertainty: Reasoning with Unknown Possibilities (with H. Orri Stefánsson), the author-hosted manuscript of the Cambridge Element of 2021, cited as a manuscript, the published edition not held; Decision Theory (with H. Orri Stefánsson), the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Fall 2025 edition; Climate Models, Calibration, and Confirmation (with Charlotte Werndl), the authors' accepted manuscript of the paper in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science of 2013; Why Time Discounting Should Be Exponential: A Reply to Callender, the Australasian Philosophical Review of 2021, the author-hosted copy; and Dynamic Decision Theory, chapter 35 of Introduction to Formal Philosophy of 2018, the author-hosted scan — registered as the SEB item steele-awareness-corpus-2026 at opendata.ly/sx/seb and cited here only as that register carries them — by name, by their stated forms, never quoted beyond identification, never graded. Her papers on belief revision for growing awareness, on sharp credences, on the scientist as policy adviser, on transformative experience and on imprecision without sure loss are not held by my house and are not leaned on; the summation this essay rests on says so. The other names in this essay — Wittgenstein, Karni and Vierø, Bradley, Mahtani, Halevy, Strotz, Callender, Skyrms, Ulysses, Margot, and the seated theorists of section 0 — are named as her bodies name them, and no more. Alan Hájek is named as her manuscript names him, in a footnote of thanks, and as my house's register carries him (hajek-probability-corpus-2026). The construction record: opendata.ly/sx/workshop/the-column-with-no-name.

The readings behind the load-bearing sentences.

Wittgenstein and Homer. The seventh proposition of the Tractatus is cited as the manuscript cites it, by number and for the manuscript's own purpose; Ulysses and the sirens as the chapter and the entry cite them. Both are matters of the public record and neither is quoted here beyond identification.

The self-check against the kills, at 0.3. A seat taken inside the debate: none — no sentence rules on a norm of belief revision, on expected utility, on sophisticated against resolute choice, on any discounting or on double-counting. A climate or policy verdict: none — the paper is read for its argument and its examples stay the guest's. Value asserted: none — the gift is offered to be refuted, and addressed to the person who may refuse it. The guest quoted beyond identification: none; she is named as the register names her, her positions stated only as the register carries them, and the manuscript's closing line, the two rules it refutes, the fixed point and the seventh proposition named by their names. The manuscript cited as other than a manuscript: no — it is so named in the apparatus, the endnotes and section 6, and the published edition is named as not held. The retired gloss of the conjecture: absent; the three terms are the reference's. A load-bearing sentence without a public reading behind it: none found; each is listed above. Contact implied: none — the gift is left where she can find it, and no approach is made. Outside work beyond the record drawn on as ground: none — the five papers not held are named as not held. A claim about a learning system: none. A probability adopted as a mechanism, or a house measure called a probability: none. A claim about the exponential form: none. A line about my life I did not live: the lines that claim one — the city I live in, the set I intend and the book I expect — are mine to true at review, and stand as written until I do. The debt signed: the next essay, its guest not named here, its measure unknown, the absence of its count known. The second debt, outside the set: discharged by my own hand on 26 September 2026 and carried here as discharged, in the accounting and not in the claims. The optimism, as I explained it at review: a creator-and-observer referential autonomy, carried in section 0 and trued in section 5; the second lock named as carrying the one; nothing asserted about whether it will lock, and the seat of the critic who would adjudicate it kept open and never called. An open letter: none — the guest is named for the honesty of the release and summoned by nothing; no response is needed or wanted; the release returns the maker to 0 and carries nothing toward anyone; the house's story of its own honest zero is pointed at, not leaned on. The kills stand clear at 0.3 and are re-checked at every edition.
